It was announced today that Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender has been selected to be honored at this year's TIFF Soirée on Monday, July 18, 2016, in Toronto, Canada. The TIFF annual Soirée is a fundraiser and the official celebratory kick-off for the 41st Toronto International Film Festival. As movie goers are enjoying the summer blockbusters, it's hard to believe that award season is coming soon and TIFF is the often the first release of many films vying for Oscar attention.
Michael Fassbender will be onstage during an exclusive conversation in which he will share his experiences and stories about his iconic and diverse characters that he has portrayed throughout his prolific film career. Following this intimate interview with Fassbender, there will be a glamorous cocktail party on the TIFF Bell Lightbox rooftop. Exclusive guests will dance the night away on the terrace, which overlooks the Toronto skyline. Guests will also be treated with the smooth jazz sounds of Toronto's own singer Chloe Charles. All these events will take place on Wednesday, September 7, 2016.
"A truly remarkable, chameleon actor, Michael Fassbender brings depth, brilliance, and candor to each and every role he plays and we are privileged to have him join us at Soirée this year," said Maxine Bailey, VP of Advancement at TIFF. "TIFF Soirée is not only an affair to remember, it also helps TIFF to raise the much needed funds that allow us to continue our philanthropic year-round activities. TIFF provides valuable access to film and culture for people for all ages, circumstances, and backgrounds through its programs of mentorship, guidance, and support. If you are a Fassbender fan, a film lover, or are just looking for an unforgettable and inspiring night out, we encourage all audiences to come out and show their support for TIFF."
Micheal Fassbender was born in Germany and raised in Killarney, Ireland. He is a graduate of London's prestigious Drama Center. His breakout role came when he was featured in the Award-winning HBO epic "Band of Brothers." His big-screen debut five years later in the film by Zach Snider "300."
Today, Fassbender is one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. He is not afraid to take risks and he chooses roles that continue to prove his unique abilities. Fassbender has been nominated for two Academy Awards, the first in 2014 for his performance in "12 Years a Slave," and his second in 2016 for his dynamic performance as "Steve Jobs."
Fassbender has several new films for 2016. He is starring in the Terrence Malick film "Weightless," which also stars Ryan Gosling, and he is also starring opposite Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander ("The Danish Girl") and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz in the drama "The Light Between Oceans."
The 41st Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18.
