Casey Affleck named Best Actor, Drama, for ‘Manchester by the Sea’ at 2017 Oscars

Actor Casey Affleck has been honored with an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “Manchester by the Sea,” at the 89th Annual Oscars tonight, Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. The yearly Academy Awards honor the best in motion pictures for the prior calendar year. The 89th Annual Academy Awards ceremony was televised live on ABC and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

In “Manchester by the Sea,” after the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

This is the first Oscar win and second nomination for Casey Affleck. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” in 2008.

“Manchester by the Sea” is rated R for language throughout and some sexual content and has a run-time of 137 minutes.
