Cate Blanchett to receive actress honors at 2016 Palm Springs Film Festival
The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival(PSIFF) announced today (in a press release sent to festival press) that it will present Oscar winning actressCate Blanchett with the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress for her work in the movies "Carol" and "Truth." The honor is the first to be announced for this year's festival and will be bestowed upon Blanchett at the yearly Awards Gala that will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, in Palm Springs, California. The Awards Gala will be hosted by TV personality Mary Hart. The Palm Springs International Film Festival will run from January 1-11.
“Cate Blanchett is one of the most award-winning and outstanding actresses of her generation, delivering extraordinary performances throughout her career including her Academy Award-winning roles as Katherine Hepburn in 'The Aviator' and the title role in Woody Allen’s 'Blue Jasmine',” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In her latest films 'Carol' and 'Truth,' Blanchett yet again brings to life two vibrant characters, both worthy of awards recognition. It is our honor to present the 2016 Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress, to Cate Blanchett.”
Past actress recipients of the Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress, include Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron, Michelle Williams and Naomi Watts. Many of the Palm Springs Film Festival Gala honorees become Oscar winners, like Julianne Moore did last year for her performance in "Still Alice." Blanchett has been honored before with a Career Achievement Award and Ensemble Performance Award for the film "Babel," at the festival in 2006.
She is also the winner of three Golden Globe Awards. Other film credits of Blanchett's include: "Cinderella," "The Hobbit," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Notes on a Scandal," and the series of the "Lord of Ring," films.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival welcomes over 135,000 attendees and is one of the largest film festivals in North America. The festival includes a spiffy Black Tie Gala that ushers in the award season with "A" list talent taking home the prizes, many of which will be winning Oscars at the end of award season. The Palm Springs International Film Festival was created by former mayor Sonny Bono in hopes that Palm Springs would always be synonymous with the film industry in Hollywood.
