'Brooklyn's Saoirse Ronan to be honored at Palm Springs International Film Fest
The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) announced today (in a press release sent to festival press) that it will present actress Saoirse Ronan with the International Star Award for her work in the new film "Brooklyn." The award will be bestowed upon Ronan at the yearly Awards Gala that will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, in Palm Springs, California. The honor is the second to be announced for this year's festival. Oscar winner Cate Blanchett will also be honored. The Awards Gala will be hosted by TV personality Mary Hart. The Palm Springs International Film Festival will run from January 1-11.

Past International Star Award honorees include BAFTA and Academy Award winning actors Helen Mirren and Javier Bardem.
"Brooklyn," tells the story Eilis, a young Irish woman living in the early 1950's that immigrates from Ireland to America - more specifically Brooklyn, New York. The erupt move to a new country on her own has Eili homesick for her beloved sister and mother. But with the support of those around her, she gets through it. And soon after she falls in love with a young Italian man that is all she could want in a man. But, when Eilis has to return for Ireland due to a family tragedy she must decide all over again - what country she wants to call home.
Ronan has a real breakout performance in "Brooklyn," as Eilis. Ronan will find this film will help her to embark on a fresh career as an adult actor. She carries this movie and she is responsible for the how good the film is.
Ronan may be best known for her role as Keira Knightley's younger sister in the film "Atonement." She received quite a bit of attention during award season in 2007 for her role in "Atonement," garnering her a Golden Globe Award nomination, BAFTA nomination and an Oscar nomination. Other film credits include Joe Wright’s "Hanna," Wes Anderson’s "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Neil Jordan's "Byzantium," Peter Weir’s "The Way Back," and Peter Jackson’s "The Lovely Bones".
In 2016, Ronan will mark her Broadway stage debut as Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible,” co-starring with Sophie Okonedo, Ben Wishaw and Tavi Gevinson. She has also recently completed filming on the big screen adaption of Anton Chekov’s "The Seagull," co-starring Annette Bening and directed by Michael Mayer.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival welcomes over 135,000 attendees and is one of the largest film festivals in North America. The festival includes a spiffy Black Tie Gala that ushers in the award season with "A" list talent taking home the prizes, many of which will be winning Oscars at the end of award season. The Palm Springs International Film Festival was created by former mayor Sonny Bono in hopes that Palm Springs would always be synonymous with the film industry in Hollywood.
