Oscars add three new Governors to Board to mend it's diversity problems

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences' President Cheryl Boone Isaacs appointed three new governors that will be added to the current roster of 51 members as stated in a press release on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, in Los Angeles, California. The new governors appointed are Gregory Nava ("El Norte") from the writers branch, Reginald Hudlin ("Django Unchained") from the Directors Branch and Jennifer Yuh Nelson ("Kung Fu Panda 2") from the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch. Each new member was confirmed by current board members and will serve three-year terms. Their service begins immediately.

“I’m proud of the steps we have taken to increase diversity,” said Boone Isaacs. "However, we know there is more to do as we move forward to make this a more inclusive organization.”

The Board also appointed more Academy members to each of the six Board committees that help to provide oversight to specific Academy areas.

Actor Gael Garcia Bernal ("Babel") was added to the Awards and Events committee. Producer Effie Brown ("Dear White People") was added to the Museum Committee, Cinematographer Amy Vincent ("Hustle & Flow") will join the Preservation and History Committee, Executive Vanessa Morrison was added to the Finance Committee, Animator Floyd Norman ("Monsters, Inc.") and Executive Marcus Hu were added to the Education and Outreach Committee and Producer Stephanie Allain ("Hustle & Flow") will join the Membership and Administration Committee.

Each branch executive committees meets every two years, beginning each spring, to review their members and to determine any potential reclassification. The committees have also adopted an appeals process for member who may lose their voting privileges.
