Box office news: 'Turtles' tops 'X-Men,' while 'Me Before You' surprises

As reported by USA Today and other news organizations "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," the follow-up film to the 2014's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," topped the box office with figures that are disappointing to Paramount pictures. "Out of the Shadows," earned $35.3 million during its debut at theaters. Its processor, earned almost twice at $65 million during its opening weekend in theaters.

Dropping from first place to second in its second week in theaters was "X-Men: Apocalypse." The film earned an additional $22.3 million in domestic receipts, and has earned a total of $117 million since its debut. With a lack-luster debut during Memorial Day Weekend and the inability to stay in first place during its second week in theaters, could this be a clue to Hollywood studios that the superhero films are not what they used to be and that perhaps movie going audiences would like to something a bit more original?

Debuting in third place at the theaters this weekend was the romantic tale "Me Before You." The film stars Emilia Clark (star from HBO's "Game of Thrones") and is based on a number one best seller by Jojo Moyes. The filmed earned an impressive $18.3 million. Considering the film had a budget of $20 million, it looks to be a big hit financially for New Line Cinema.

Rounding out the top five are Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass," which dropped two spots and earned $10.7 million and Sony's "The Angry Birds Movie," which dropped from third to fifth place earning an additional $9.8 million.

Universal's "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," had a disappointing debut, missing the top five entirely and placing at eighth place earning $4.6 million.

Next weekend watch to see if "The Conjuring 2," is able to bring as many horror fans to the theater as it did for the 2013's "The Conjuring." Another sequel, "Now You See Me 2," and action adventure "Warcraft," will also hit theaters to vie for your movie dollars.
