Movie Review: 2016 'Me Before You'

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

It's really a tough sell when a Hollywood gives us a romantic comedy centered on a sweet and charming girl that falls in love with a wheel chair-bound quadriplegic that is set on ending his own life in the film "Me Before You." Why romantic comedies almost always have such a dark element to me, totally eludes me. Surely, lots of people fall in love, have funny and awkward moments together without a tragedy in the mix.

Starring in this film is Emilia Clark ("Game of Thrones") and Sam Clafin ("The Hunger Games"). Both actors do their best on a story, which was adapted from a best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes. But truly with such a doom and gloom pathway, it's difficult to laugh at even the lighter moments.

Most annoying and completely distracting is the eyebrow movements wielded to the audiences on the large cinematic screen by Emilia Clark - she is never annoying on "Game of Thrones," and I was really disappointed. Surely, when the film hits DVD and home-streaming it won't be so obvious. I get why she was asked to be so animated, she was the only actor moving! But it also makes her character completely unbelievable.

"Me Before You" is rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some suggestive material and has a run-time of one hour and 50 minutes.
