'Star Trek Beyond' soars to first place at the box office during debut weekend
Paramount's "Star Trek Beyond," directed by Justin Lin and starring Chris Pine, debuted in first place at the box office this weekend earning $59.6 million in domestic receipts. The film has also earned critical success as it has earned an 84% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com.
Dropping from first to second place is the animated hit from Universal "The Secret Life of Pets," which earned an additional $29.3 million and secured a domestic total of over $206 million. Dropping one spot and landing in third place was Sony's all-female reboot of "Ghostbusters." The film garnered $21.6 million over this last weekend. Also earning $21.6 and tied for third place was the debut of the horror thriller "Lights Out." Rounding off the top five, was the debut of the animated film from Fox, "Ice Age: Collision Course." The film earned an impressive part of the weekend monies in U.S. in Canada of $21 million.
The debut of "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie," did not receive fabulous numbers, landing in 14th place on the leader board and earning $1.9 million. And Bryan Cranston's new film "The Infiltrator," dropped from eighth to tenth place during its second week in theaters, earning an additional $3.3 million.
Next weekend watch to see if the return of Matt Damon as "Jason Bourne," has the gusto to beat out beat out "Star Trek Beyond," or if the comedy "Bad Moms," has what it takes to bring the most fans to the movies.
