“La La Land,” ties record for 14 nominations at the 2017 Oscars

The Academy Award nominations were presented for the first time in full, on-line via live streaming. It was no surprise that the critics favorite “La La Land” topped the list with 14 nominations. The film is tied with “All About Eve” (1950) and “Titanic” (1997) for the most nominations for a film. “Moonlight,” and the science fiction film “Arrival” tied in second place for eight nominations each.

In the Best Actress nominations, one big and glaring omission was a nomination for Amy Adams in “Arrival,” especially considering the film has eight nominations, including a nomination for Best Film. Meryl Streep received her 20th nomination today for her role in “"Florence Foster Jenkins" and the Golden Globe winner for Best Actress this year, Isabelle Huppert in "Elle," also received an Oscar nomination.

The Best Actor nominations included the front runner Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea,” Andrew Garfield for “Hacksaw Ridge,” Ryan Gossling for “La La Land,” Denzel Washington for “Fences” and Viggo Mortensen for “Captain Fantastic.” Missing from this list was a nomination for Tom Hanks in “Sully.”

For Achievement in Directing, the nominees included Denis Villeneuve for “Arrival,” Mel Gibson for “Arrival,” Damien Chazelle for “La La Land,” Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea,” and Barry Jenkins for “Moonlight.” Missing from this list was an anticipated nomination for Denzel Washington for “Fences.”

"O.J.: Made in America" has been cleaning up in the television categories all year long. But the film had a one week release in Los Angeles theaters in order to be eligible for an Oscar nomination and the strategy paid off as the film in included in the nominations for Best Documentary Feature.

The 89th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on Oscar Sunday, February 26 on the ABC Television Network.
