‘Hidden Figures’ wins SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a cast in a motion picture

With its successful box office run, it was not a surprise to me that “Hidden Figures,” won for its ensemble cast award at the 23rd Annual Screen Actor Guild Awards tonight, Sunday, January 29, 2017, at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles, California. The yearly SAG Awards honor the best in motion pictures and television for the prior calendar year. The 23rd Annual SAG Awards ceremony was televised live on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. (ET)/5 p.m. (PT).

With “Moonlight,” winning the Golden Globe for best drama film and this new win for “Hidden Figures,” it appears that the Best Picture Oscar is up for grabs. But I think the modern musical by Damien Chazelle “La La Land,” will win the top honor at the next Academy Awards.

Most of the wins tonight saw wins across the board of nominees. Denzel Washington won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in August Wilson’s “Fences,” and Viola Davis took home a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for the same film. Emma Stone won the Best Actress honors for “La La Land," leaving the front runner Natalie Portman out in the cold for her performance in “Jackie.” Will Portman finally be acknowledged at the Oscars?

Winning Best Supporting Actor was Ali Mahershala for his touching performance in “Moonlight.” I believe that Mahershala will also be victorious at the Oscars for his brilliant performance.

In the television categories, it was clear that cable channels were winning all the awards. Bryan Cranston won his first major award for portraying President Johnson in HBO’s “All the Way.” And it was no surprise that Sarah Paulson won the Best Actress honor for her role in “The People v. O.J. Simpson.”

In the drama categories, John Lithgow won the Best Actor honor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the Netflix series “The Crown,” and actress Claire Foy also won Best Actress honors portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the same series. But “The Crown,” was not able to bring home the ensemble award. That honor went to the ensemble of another Netflix original series “Stranger Things.”

In the comedy categories, “Orange is the New Black,” won its third consecutive honor for Best Ensemble. Julia Louis Dreyfus took home her first SAG Award for portraying Selina Meyer in the HBO series “Veep.” And William H. Macy took home second SAG Award for his work in Showtime’s series “Shameless.”

Lily Tomlin was awarded the Life Achievement Award, which was presented by her "9 to 5" co-star Dolly Parton. Dolly had an unanticipated standing ovation when she took the stage to honor her friend Lily Tomlin. When Lily accepted her award, she told of having a wasted youth because she was always in trouble. And that her life turned around when she learned to turn her flaws into spiritual wisdom. She also added a tidbit for new actors by saying behind every failure is an opportunity.
