Damien Chazelle named Best Director for ‘La La Land’ at 2017 Oscars


Filmmaker Damien Chazelle has been honored with an Academy Award for Best Director for his film “La La Land,” at the 89th Annual Oscars tonight, Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California. The yearly Academy Awards honor the best in motion pictures for the prior calendar year. The 89th Annual Academy Awards ceremony was televised live on ABC and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

“La La Land,” written and directed by Academy Award nominee Damien Chazelle, tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

This is the second Oscar win and third nomination for filmmaker Damien Chazelle. He was honored with his first Oscar earlier this evening Best Original Screenplay for “La La Land.” He was nominated in 2015 for Best Original Screenplay for his previous film “Whiplash.”

“La La Land” is rated PG-13 for language and has a run-time of 128 minutes.
