The Oscars to celebrate the music of the movies, including Prince's 'Purple Rain'

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences released news yesterday that they will celebrate the music of the movies. This celebration includes the West Coast restoration premiere of "King of Jazz," a special screening of "Purple Rain," with members of the cast & crew, and a live concert celebration of The Black Movie Soundtrack, which will feature the Oscar-winning recording artist Common and special guests. The events are set to take place at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater and the iconic Hollywood Bowl.

Details are as follows:

Wednesday, August 17 at 7:30pm at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater

West Coast restoration premiere of "King of Jazz," from 1930 and starring Paul Whiteman, John Boles and Laura La Plante.

This event will be hosted by Academy governor and Oscar winner Michael Giacchino (Composer of "Up") and animation director David Silverman. "King of Jazz," has been restored to its original length and features the color via glorious two-color Technicolor process. The film is a revue with sketches, songs and production numbers built around American composer, bandleader and orchestral director Paul Whiteman. The film earned an Oscar for Art Director, as it was filmed entirely in early two-color Technicolor, and features the first-ever Technicolor animation by Walter Lantz.

Monday, August 29 at 7:30 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater

"Purple Rain," from 1984 - the film by Prince

Moderated by Academy governor Reginald Hudlin (Producer "Django Unchained") and special guests actor Jerome Benton, director Albert Magnoli, producer Robert Cavallo and costume designer Marie France, the Oscars celebrate the legacy and life of Prince with a special screening of "Purple Rain." The film will be shown in a brand new 35mm optical stereo print. The 1984 film won an Oscar for Original Song Score and grossed almost $70 million at the box office. "Purple Rain," was just one of the projects that made Prince into the superstar he was.
